I. LECTURES

    Week 1: Introduction

We were given a module briefing this week, also a brief understanding about pre-production, production, and post-production.

Pre-production:
  • Idea development
  • Story
  • Storyboard
  • Visual References
  • Location/ Props
Production:
  • Lighting
  • Costume
  • Principal Shooting
Post-production:
  • Offline editing
  • Online editing
  • Audio editing
➼     Week 2 : Video Framing

For this week, we learnt about how to do video framing. Shot sizes, composition, cinematography, and screen direction is essential to achieve good storytelling in making videos. This knowledge is highly required for project 2 and final project.

➼     Week 3 : Audio Dubbing

To prepare for project 1, we were introduced to 2 types of sound effects:
  • Hard sound effects, are to enhance a particular action or event (ex. glass breaking, gunshots).
  • Ambient effects, are sounds to create a particular atmosphere or environment (ex. wind sound, crowd noise).
➼     Week 4 : Production Stages

Because we are going to prepare for our production shoot, Mr. Martin gives us study materials about pre-production. He gave article links from studiobinder which has a lot of beneficial information for our shooting process later on:
➼     Week 5 : mise en scène

mise en scène refers to all the visuals shown in front of camera—location, colors, set, props, costumes, lighting, and everything. For further reading, Mr. Martin gave us a study material about this:
  • https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/mise-en-scene- - mise en scène elements.
➼     Week 6 : Color Correction & Color Grading

Color correction is to fix the colors of all the shots so the scenes could act cohesively, while color grading refers to how colors are edited to give a stylistic look.

II. INSTRUCTIONS

III. TASKS

➼     Week 1

Exercise for the first week was relatively easy, it's only to introduce us in using Adobe Premiere Pro. So, the instructions are still simple, only compile all the broken clips into the proper videos.

Here are the results:

➼     'Doritos' Exercise

➼     Week 2

I learnt about various of shots in class, and also we are taught to how to analyze videos and diffrenciate between ideas, story, and storyboard. Here are some of my notes which I deemed important that I wrote during class:

Video Example 1
Idea: The joy of childhood innocence.
Story: The child making friends.
Storyboard: The child talking with penguin - the child playing ski with penguin - penguin sees couple- child sees penguin - child buys penguin gift - penguin is only imagination.

Video Example 2
Idea: Happiness is as simple as giving people our shares.
Story: A kind man helping those in need in his daily life.
Storyboard: Man give chicken to dog - men help old woman cross the road - man help everyone - man donate poor kid go school - man found poor kid finally able to go to school - man happy and feel moved.

Shots
MCU: Shoulder up
MS: Waist Up
3/4 Angle: MCU but tilt 45 degrees to show the facial features.

➼     Shooting Exercise: Framing

This exercise includes 8 shots:
Close-up, frontal MCU, frontal MS, extreme close-up, Side angle MS, 3/4 angle MCU, low-angle WS, eye-level MWS. We are divided into groups of 3, where we will take turns in shooting the videos of our teammates.

I'm afraid some of the shots while I edit, so to save time I just renamed each clips so that I know immediately which clip is which.

I unlinked and deleted all the audio because it sounds disturbing. Also, I inserted transition between clips and captions so it looks smoother.

Here's the result:

In addition to the camera exercise, we were tasked to answer some questions regarding the 2 movies we watched.

➼     Understanding Storytelling: Everything, Everywhere All At Once

Act two: Evelyn then started to jump across universes, getting the skills of herself from alternate realities. After that, she learns about Jobu—the main villain, which is actually an alternate version of her daughter. Evelyn is overwhelmed by the chaos and started to lose hope.

Act three: Evelyn realized that rather than fighting, the only way to solve the problem is through love and understanding. She then confronts her daughter, and they eventually reconciled.

Act two: While she kept growing more popular, she still struggles with her self image. Lalin and the man grow closer due to them contacting each other every day, hence they eventually started dating online. As time goes by, The man decides to visit her in person, prompting Lalin to reveal her true-self.

➼     Week 3

➼     Shooting Exercise: Part II

For this week, there's another camera shot exercise where we did together as groups of 5. Here are the lists of shots needed:
1. Deep focus- FG: MCU, BG: full body
2. O.S. on M.S.
3. O.S on M.W.S (Face to Face)
4. Tight M.S.
5. Tight M.S. side angle
Mostly it was me who is holding the camera, so I'm not inside of any clips. Finally, my groupmate compiled all the clips into one and here's the result:

➼     Week 5

➼     Storyboarding Exercise

We are given a set of shots by Mr. Martin which we will later try to make a storyboard for it. Storyboarding is essential in pre-production to visualize how the production phase will go—hence we might be able to spot mistakes that is not explicitly shown in the shot list. The storyboard shown in (Figure 3.8) includes the shot list, sketch, shot size, props, and sound effects in order.

➼     Week 9

➼     VFX Exercise

To prepare us for the final project, Mr. Martin gave us a final exercise. This exercise is about trying a visual effect edit by following a tutorial from YouTube. The video seems short but surprisingly it took me quite a long time to finish as the masking  to do to make the effect work.

IV. REFLECTIONS

Doing the exercises was a lot of fun! To be honest, it's far less pressure compared to the exercises from other modules. In this module, the exercises are similar to Digital Photography & Imaging that I took in semester 1, it leveraged our fundamentals in using the applications we need for our final project, it gave us the necessary knowledge on how the production of sounds and videos work. As a result, our burden in doing the projects later on will be far less because we have already been using and also being exposed from this field. I particularly like how they approach us with the exercises, it's little by little on a weekly basis. Even without pushing us too hard, we still could get all the things we required at the end.
