I. LECTURES

➼     Introduction to Composition

When settling in a composition, firstly we need to have a strong focal point to help the viewers eyes see directly to the important pieces of the design, also you could play with scales to assist in this. But, note that each of the elements have weight, smaller objects might have less weight, heavily textured elements might weight more compared to flatly colored ones. Utilizing white space in the design strategically is the key to balance out the different weighted elements, as it will allow the design to 'breathe'.

➼     Rule of Thirds

Figure 1.1. Rule of thirds (2/10/2024).

Rule of thirds is a very useful guideline to create balanced and engaging images, but note that it is not a MUST, some great images were also created without using this composition, so experiment is necessary. Basically this rule is when the elements are position in the line intersection spots, it will produce a more natural image.

➼     Golden Ratio

This is another guideline that when used in design, presents a naturally looking composition that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and its very useful for determining dimensions in a layout.

II. TUTORIAL

In this week, we were tasked to cut out physical collage elements from magazines, book, anything that could be cut out to make it into 3 compositions with our own concepts.

III. PRACTICAL

I went into bookstores and bought several magazines to also share with my fellow peers, we each took what we liked from the pages, and cut it out accordingly into our pre-composition. I took out 2 concepts; first one is inspired by African American heritage style, while the second one is about marine life.

➼     Pre-Composition #3

Mr. Fauzi chose my second pre-composition as the best one, but he advised that the bottom right part could add something more, so it wouldn't look too plain.

➼     Final Composition

And here's how it will look from a different angle to assess its texture and overall composition:

➼     Extras (The SHOW Mural Competition by Taylor's Design School)

In this particular week, we also attended a event hosted by Taylor's Design School at The Atrium, Starhill, Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. Basically it's an event showcasing the works of our TDS senior students.

There was a fashion show and a mural competition, which of course, we, as BDCM students were encouraged to participate in the mural competition. We formed teams among ourselves, then the task was to do a drawing in a two-page spread. We eventually lost, but having fun with our friends, the tension when time's ticking away, and competing against our fellow peers will always be an unforgettable moment to all of us.

The exhibition of the BDCM seniors students particularly caught my eye, it's very intriguing and thinking that I will also be making works like that in the upcoming semesters excites me even more! Below are the photos that we took when participating the event:

Last but not least, here's the group photo of our team members. A big thank you to everyone for the hard work, see you in another opportunity!

IV. REFLECTIONS

Creating a physical collage is a very challenging task for me, as I am not used to cutting and sticking with my hands. Therefore, I can't fully control how it will turns out, sometimes the cuts are messy and have a lot of creases in it, but we can't simply use CTRL+Z (undo) like you can in digital formats.

Despite that, the actual learning is the process along the way, and it's always an exciting experience to be able to engage it traditional designs again, since all of our modules are always digital-based.

Your attention is valued, thank you for reading until the end!
