I. LECTURES

➼     Lasso Tool

The lasso tool will allow you to pinpoint specific areas, similar to a pencil. But its better to use a graphic tablet with it, as it will offer a better flow when making selections.

➼     Pen Tool

Pen tool is the most common tool you will use, you add points, drag as you create the points, that will determine how the shape would look like (THE FEWER THE POINTS, THE SMOOTHER THE PATH). It is the most precise tool to use, therefore it is usually applied for detailed designs.

    Layering

Layers are different images stack altogether, creating a combined image. Adjustments done in a particular layer does not affect the others, you could take advantage of this to do non-destructive editing.

‣    Non-destructive editing are editings or adjustments without permanently altering the original image.

II. TUTORIAL

In this week, we were tasked to create 3 digital collage compositions in Adobe Photoshop with A4 vertical size from the images given by Mr. Fauzi. ONLY CUTTING AND PASTING, NO ADJUSTMENT LAYERS OR FILTERS ARE ALLOWED.

III. PRACTICAL

When I do the cutting, I mostly used the pen tool along with the background remover feature directly from the Adobe Photoshop system, because only relying on the background remover will leave some uncut parts, so we need the pen tool to do the finishing cuts.

➼     Composition #1 : Freeform

In this composition. I didn't consider any grids that were taught. I merely experimented with the elements given into making this collage, so that I could familiarize myself for the two latter collages.

I used multiple copy of buildings as the background, because it could fill the room more compared to other objects. To stick with the theme, I put a lot of city elements such as people, trains, and some smaller objects to support the background, so it would not look that plain.

Lastly, for the focal point, I wanted something to stand out, so I chose the fish. The fish has opposite oriented shapes and color compared to the background, making it being emphasized more than the other objects.

➼     Composition #2 : Golden Ratio

After I familiarized myself with the tools, I proceed to use a gridline: Golden Ratio. I found the fish as a focal point rather interesting. So in this collage, I improvised which is by making copies of fish, only to support one particular fish as the focal point. Additionally, I utilized some flowy-shaped objects like the plants, that also eventually lead to it.

➼     Composition #3 : Rule of Thirds

For the third one, I wanted to try with something different, not using the fish as the focal point anymore. After I searched through the elements, I can't find anything that would match as a focal point except the projector, typewriter, and the fish, so that means its either the projector or the typewriter.

Honestly after testing, I think the projector won't act that good as a focal point. It has dark colors that could prevent it from catching the viewer's attention. This is because other given elements are mostly bright colors, which by logic, will definitely be noticed more. So at the end, I decided to use the typewriter as the focal point, also placing it at the intersecting lines of the grids, in order to apply rule of thirds.

I especially liked the fish, then it came into mind that the fishes could be utilized in other unique ways. Therefore, I used them as abstracts elements to support larger objects that eventually making the design feels interesting and vibrant.

For the following week, I planned to apply darken to the fishes, because it looked very unappealing without blending modes. Effects will certainly help a lot. Compare the above with below:

➼     FINAL Chosen Collage

Mr. Fauzi chose my third collage out of the 3, which after that I could proceed with applying adjustment layers and filters for the next week's submission.

IV. REFLECTIONS

To be honest, this task is far easier compared to physical collage, because there are so many tools in Photoshop that could help us to achieve what we actually want. Physical collage have too many restrictions, while this one is the opposite. Hence we could be expressive on our designs as freely as possible.

Even though we were given limited materials to use, I think that's a good thing. With limited materials, we can focus more on the art that we are doing rather than focusing on just choosing the infinite amount of materials out there, which could confuse us from the very beginning.
