I. LECTURES

➼     Digital Surrealism

Realism means reality, the image portrays it as it is. Surrealism on the other hand, distorts the ordinary reality we see, creating dream-like images. This is one of the top digital artstyles right now, as it enables the artists to express themselves freely.

There are 2 types if you want to start doing surrealism work:

1. Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
2. Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions

II. TUTORIAL

In this week, we were tasked to do a joint project with the Illustration & Visual Narrative module, that is making a poster with our own photographic elements and types. But the task for Digital Photography & Imaging is only related to the photography, and we are recommended to use the techniques that have been taught before.

III. PRACTICAL

➼     Moodboard

Mr. Fauzi told us to find 3 references for us to refer to, because working with reference will guide us more easily on how to start. I searched all of these from Pinterest, and they share similar characteristics: all of these posters are using realistic styles, keeping it simple without using any hectic elements.

➼     Sketch

Based on the moodboard, I chose the quote: Life's greatest treasures are found in the simple pleasures. This quote means to appreciate the simple experiences you have been through in life, as those little moments are the one that eventually shapes us as who we are.

I made this quote because I thought that I recalled many times about people describing the "simple pleasures of life", and I used the word "treasures" because it matches the sound of "simple pleasures".

My design concept is something that emphasizes my mindfulness in daily life. So to match the vibe, I’m planning to use natural tones and lighter text weights to highlight warmth and simplicity.

After my quote has been approved by Mr. Fauzi, I started the initial sketch of my poster, which then I sent to Mr. Fauzi and Mr. Hafiz (our lecturer for the Illustration & Visual Narrative module) for approval.

Figure 3.4: Initial sketches (18/11/24).

This sketches have been approved but Mr. Hafiz (our lecturer from IVN) suggested me to go with the first one, because the second one used up too many text and he said it's better to focus on one particular text. After that, I revised my sketch based on the first one to match the images I had before because I used the photos I took a year before, not a newly taken photo.
Figure 3.5: Revised sketch (18/11/24).

The main photo is a photo I took back at my hometown, which is in Bintan Island, then the second photo is a portrait of me which I planned to photoshop it into the background, and the last photo is a photo in the same area, but I photographed the clear waters instead of the scenery. These are all the elements that I am going to use for the poster.

We were also told to do digital sketch before doing the project, the digital sketch could be a form of digital collage using images that I am going to use, so that I could get the rough idea of the design. Also, these are the proof that these photos are really from me:

Figure 3.7: Shot photos, Galaxy S23, Samsung Gallery app(18/11/24).

In this design I'm only going to photoshop myself into scenery, because Mr. Fauzi said the photo is already good and shouldn't need any major refinements anymore.

Now about the process, of course the first thing I will do is to mask out myself into the background. Then, I applied a white color fill layer below the background, and resized the background smaller to make the poster feel like those instant photos produced directly from Instax Fujifilm cameras. Additionally, I put the water image on top of everything to give a more texturized appearance similar to paintings on canvases or papers.

Figure 3.9: Process #1, masking and layouting (18/11/24).

I applied a reflection of myself in the water, using the techniques we had used in the Week 5 exercise to make it more realistic, then played around adjustment layers to create a more dramatic effect. I used warm hues so that the poster evokes a nostalgic feeling.

The shadows seems a bit weird, so I did some research about lighting and shadows, and re-edited the reflection using warp tool, blending modes, and brushes to create a wet effect. All of these is to make it more realistic.

This is the final poster before moving into Adobe Illustrator for the IVN task.

To create depth, I stacked the image of me again so that I could be in front of the text. I tried masking other objects and make it in front of the text too, but in return it sacrifices readability. At the end, I just proceed with only stacking the image of myself.

And here's the final result:

IV. REFLECTIONS

This task is the first joint project in the semester, so I'm quite excited when we're briefed about the task. The assessment criteria in this module is also quite straightforward, as long as we learn correctly from the start, then there will be not much difficulty for us to proceed, because it's already sufficient with all the methods we learned so far to complete this task.

However, we should also consider how the text could match the image to maintain a cohesive poster, because all this time we're only working with images, not texts. So, that adds a new challenge for this module.

Your attention is valued, thank you for reading until the end!
